Info in advance: Which motorhome am I allowed to drive?
Would you prefer to go on holiday in a camper van, panel van, or motorhome? Then you should clarify in advance which type of motorhome you are allowed to drive. The more people are part of the trip, the larger the mobile home should be. Accordingly, the weight of the vehicle also increases. Your driving licence depends on this total weight, which can be found in part 1 of the registration certificate. If you passed your driving test before 1999, you are allowed to drive vehicles up to 7.5 tons. Since then, it is only 3.5 tons. In other words: For motorhomes over 3.5 tons and up to 7.5 tons, you need a C1 or Class 3 (pre-1999) driving licence. If you want to drive an even larger vehicle, a Class C licence is necessary (or the old Class 2). All vehicles under 3.5 tons can be driven with a Class B licence.

A camper up to 3.5 tons is sufficient, for example, for a couple without children. Those travelling with their family should opt for a larger vehicle. It is best to weigh your vehicle before departure to ensure you do not exceed the allowable weight for your driving licence. You can find a vehicle scale at some ADAC test centres, for example.

Recently, holidays at campsites have become increasingly popular. Over 42 million overnight stays were recorded at German campsites in 2023. If you rent a caravan, basic equipment – such as dishes, pots, and cutlery – should already be provided. It's best to check with the rental company. This includes spices, hygiene items, clothing for every occasion, underwear, toilet paper, kitchen rolls, towels, bottle and can openers, dish soap, and anything else you might need for a relaxing holiday. Furthermore, ensure you always carry important papers and documents with you. These include ID card, driving licence, insurance card, international health insurance, credit card, toll sticker, and if you're travelling with your pet, also the pet passport.
