For every surface and task, there’s the right sandpaper with the ideal grit. Grit is typically indicated with “P”, “K”, or “G” followed by a number: the higher the number, the finer the sanding result. Sandpapers with coarse grit up to 80 are primarily used for rough sanding of wood. Grits between 80 and 150 are ideal for smoothing already processed wood, while grits above 150 are used for fine sanding during woodworking. Grinding discs often classify grit with “G”, following the same rule: the smaller the number, the coarser the grit and the faster the material removal. Polishing discs, for instance, may have a grit of 400, perfect for smoothing metal or steel. Tip: Replace your sanding material as soon as it feels smooth or its performance decreases. Signs include needing more pressure or uneven material removal.
For every sanding project, there is the right sandpaper shape: Round discs are ideal for random orbital sanders and offer even wear. Triangular sandpapers, especially for drywall sanders, are perfectly suited for wall work and enable precise sanding in corners and along edges. Delta-shaped sandpapers fit perfectly on multi-sanders and delta sanders and also reach hard-to-access areas. Rectangular sandpapers are optimal for orbital sanders and deliver an even result on large surfaces. Sanding belts are specially designed for belt sanders and file sanders, allowing extensive material removal or precise sanding.
Abrasive mesh is primarily used in drywall work, and for good reason: the mesh allows efficient dust extraction and offers a longer lifespan. When sanding drywall, materials that generate very fine dust are often involved, making thorough dust extraction even more essential. For this reason, abrasive meshes with grid holes are predominantly used to extract as much dust as possible. Additionally, the sanding performance of abrasive mesh on surfaces like drywall is superior because the sanding pressure is distributed more evenly. When sanding, fine particles can clog sandpaper, filling the gaps between the abrasive grains and effectively smoothing out the sandpaper itself. This requires increased pressure to continue sanding, rendering the sandpaper almost useless. With a mesh, clogging is not an issue because the abrasive grains are integrated into the mesh structure, allowing dust to be extracted between them. This results in excellent sanding performance without the need for excessive pressure.
